By Derek Kreymer, Operations Manager

The post is a loading dock in Pittsfield, a hotel lot in Lenox, or a gate on a job site off Route 7. The shift runs where the county runs. Berkshire County is the western end of Massachusetts, with about 128,224 residents (U.S. Census Bureau, July 1, 2025 estimate) spread across 32 cities and towns. Pittsfield is the county seat and the only large city. North Adams, Adams, Williamstown, Great Barrington, Dalton and Lee are the next biggest communities.

County government was abolished on July 1, 2000, so the state, the regional planning commission and each town now handle what the county once did. That means every property owner deals with local police, local fire and local permits. Hub Security and Investigative Group provides Berkshire County security guard services for the properties those towns are built around: hospitals, mills converted to offices and galleries, campuses, outlets, resorts and the main streets between them.

Route 7 carries traffic north to south through Sheffield, Great Barrington, Stockbridge, Lenox, Pittsfield, Lanesborough and Williamstown. Route 2 crosses the north through Williamstown and North Adams. The Massachusetts Turnpike enters at Lee at Exit 10. Those corridors decide where the crowds go, where the trucks go, and where a guard needs to be.

Communities we cover in Berkshire County

Hub covers the full county, from the Vermont line to the Connecticut line. Several of the larger towns have their own page. The rest are listed here because the work is the same: a post, a set of orders, a patrol route and a dispatcher who picks up. Our Berkshire County security guard services reach the following communities. This is a service area, not a client list.

Event posts from Tanglewood to Jacob’s Pillow

Summer is the busy season in the hill towns. Tanglewood in Lenox and Stockbridge is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and its main shed seats about 5,700. Jacob’s Pillow in Becket draws dance audiences up a rural road with limited parking. Williamstown has the Williamstown Theatre Festival, founded in 1954, and the Clark Art Institute. North Adams has MASS MoCA, which runs more than 80 performance events a year.

None of these venues is a Hub client, and we do not claim otherwise.

We list them because they show the kind of work this county produces: crowd flow, parking, gate control, lost children, drunk patrons and vendors who need a path to the loading area.

For venues, festivals, galas and private parties, Hub provides event security with officers who hold Crowd Manager certification through the MA Department of Fire Services. New hires also get CPR, First Aid and Narcan training before they take a post. We staff single events and full seasons. A summer-only contract is normal here, and Hub writes it that way instead of forcing a year-round agreement. That training goes to every Berkshire County security event we staff.

Hospital and campus coverage in Pittsfield, North Adams and Williamstown

Berkshire Health Systems is one of the largest employers in Western Massachusetts. Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield is a 300-bed full-service community hospital. Williams College in Williamstown has about 2,200 students on a 450-acre campus. These are not Hub accounts. They are the type of property where a guard works a fixed post for a full shift, logs every visitor, and walks the same checkpoints at the same intervals.

Hub offers unarmed security guards for lobbies, parking structures, dorms and clinics, and armed security guards where the risk calls for it. Every armed guard carries an unrestricted Massachusetts License to Carry. The firearm can be concealed or visible, at the client’s choice. Front-desk officers get customer-service training along with security training, and they learn whatever visitor-management system the building already runs. Most Berkshire County security posts are unarmed.

Mill buildings and job sites along Route 2 and Route 7

The county’s old mills did not all become museums. Many sit empty or half-leased between North Adams, Adams, Pittsfield and Dalton, and a vacant brick building with copper inside is a target. Berkshire winters add a second problem. A sprinkler system that freezes and fails leaves the building without fire protection until it is repaired. Add the construction traffic that follows every redevelopment and you have three distinct posts in one structure.

Berkshire County security guard services for these buildings usually begin with a single question from the owner or the insurance carrier: who is physically checking the property, and how often can that be documented?

Hub provides construction site security for active projects, including gate control, delivery logs and after-hours checks. We provide fire watch services when an alarm or sprinkler system is out of service and the fire department requires a person on site. For buildings that do not need a full-time guard, mobile patrol covers several properties on one GPS-tracked route. The patrol officer checks doors, scans checkpoints, and reports what he found.

The owner gets a time-stamped record, not a promise. A GPS-tracked route is the most common Berkshire County security request from owners of several small properties. Fire watch is the Berkshire County security job that arrives with the least notice.

Retail and resort patrols from Lee Premium Outlets to Jiminy Peak

Lee Premium Outlets sits at Exit 10 of the Turnpike with 60 stores and a lot that fills on holiday weekends. Jiminy Peak in Hancock runs 45 trails in winter and an adventure park in summer, so the parking and lodging never fully empty. Great Barrington’s Main Street and downtown Pittsfield carry the day-to-day retail.

Each of these places has the same problem set: theft, loitering, car break-ins, and staff who close up alone at night. The seasonal pattern matters as well, because a resort lot that is empty in April can be full on a February Saturday, and the coverage schedule should follow that calendar rather than ignore it.

Hub’s retail security services put a uniformed officer where shoppers and staff can see him. Mobile patrol covers lots, hotel grounds and outbuildings on a schedule the client sets. If a loss problem is bigger than a guard can fix, our private investigation services can run surveillance, background checks and interviews to find where the loss is coming from. Hub also performs process serving and CORI checks for Massachusetts clients.

How Hub sets up Berkshire County security guard services

The post comes first. Before any coverage starts, Hub walks the property with the client and plans the post. We photograph every entrance and check-in point. The photos and the orders go into a post-orders book that stays on site, so the officer on the third weekend of the contract has the same instructions as the officer on day one. Checkpoint scanners are placed at doors and corners.

The officer scans each one on every round, which proves the walk and records the time. Vehicle patrols are GPS-tracked for the same reason. That book is the backbone of every Berkshire County security post.

Dispatch is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. An officer who needs backup, a client who needs a schedule change, or a property manager who gets an alarm at 3 a.m. all reach a live dispatcher. The Operations Manager visits sites unannounced. Once a quote is approved, Hub matches a new account with a guard within 24 to 48 hours. Every guard is a Hub employee who has been background-checked and vetted.

Hub does not use subcontractors, and the company carries $3 million in general liability insurance. Hub was founded in 2004 by police officers, and the founders remain with the company as consultants. Berkshire County security coverage can start that quickly because the planning is already done. Ask for both documents before you sign any Berkshire County security contract.

The post orders themselves are specific to each property. They name the entrances to lock, the tenants who may enter after hours, the contractor who is allowed on the roof, and the number to call when a situation exceeds the officer’s authority. Hub’s leadership has more than 75 years of combined experience in law enforcement, loss prevention and private investigations, and that experience is what shapes the orders.

Hub has reviewed post orders from dozens of commercial and residential sites and can audit the orders an incoming client already has in place.

Clients who want a plan before they buy coverage can start with a security risk assessment. The report tells you which posts you need and which you do not. It is the cheapest Berkshire County security decision you will make.

Licensing for security work in this county

Hub Security and Investigative Group operates under Private Detective Firm License #LP0203L, a private security and detective license held since 2004 and licensed through the Massachusetts State Police Certification Unit. The license belongs to the company and covers both guard work and investigation work in Massachusetts. Our Berkshire County security guard services run under that license, the same as every other county in the state.

Questions about Berkshire County security guard services

Can Hub cover a summer-only venue in the Berkshires?

Yes. Hub writes seasonal contracts and single-event contracts. If your season runs from late June to Labor Day, the coverage runs the same dates. The post-orders book, the checkpoint scans and the dispatch line are the same whether the contract is for one weekend or a full year. That is how Berkshire County security works in the small towns too.

How fast can a guard reach a site in a hill town like Becket or Savoy?

Scheduled posts are staffed in advance, so the officer is on site before the shift starts. For a new account, Hub matches the site with a guard within 24 to 48 hours of an approved quote. For a property that needs checks but not a full post, mobile patrol is often the better fit, and the route is GPS-tracked so you can see each visit.

Does Hub serve the whole county or only Pittsfield?

The whole county. Hub provides Berkshire County security guard services from Williamstown and Clarksburg on the Vermont line to Sheffield and Mount Washington on the Connecticut line. We work only in Massachusetts. Properties just over the New York or Vermont line are outside our service area.
