By Derek Kreymer, Operations Manager

Hampden County was carved out of the southern half of Hampshire County on August 1, 1812, and named for John Hampden, the English parliamentarian. Today the county holds about 464,000 people by the U.S. Census Bureau’s July 1, 2025 estimate, and roughly a third of them live in Springfield, the county seat. The county government itself was abolished in 1998, and its functions passed to state agencies. There is no county council or commission.

What remains is a shared geography, a shared set of highways and a shared economy.

That is why Hub Security and Investigative Group offers Hampden County security guard services as one connected service area rather than a scatter of separate towns.

Look at a map and the shape of the work becomes clear. Interstate 91 runs north to south through Longmeadow, Springfield, Chicopee and Holyoke. The Massachusetts Turnpike crosses east to west. The short I-291 loop ties the two together, running from I-91 in Springfield to the Pike interchange in Chicopee, and I-391 carries traffic from Chicopee north into Holyoke.

Along those corridors sit the properties that need Hampden County security guard services: hospitals, colleges, old mill buildings waiting for a second life, distribution yards, downtown garages, apartment complexes, and the fairgrounds and arenas that fill up on weekends. Farther out, in hill towns like Chester and Blandford or in the farm country around Granville and Brimfield, the needs are smaller but no less real. A construction trailer, a seasonal event, a vacant building the owner cannot watch every night: each one is a post.

Communities we cover in Hampden County

Hub serves all of Hampden County from the Connecticut line to the Hampshire County border. The larger cities and towns have their own pages, linked below, with detail on the kinds of posts we see there. The smaller towns are covered from this page. This is our service area, not a client list, and nothing here should be read as a claim that Hub already works at a particular site.

Where Hampden County security guard services are needed, and why

The county’s story is a story of making things, and the buildings from that era still shape the work. The Springfield Armory began turning out muskets in 1794 as the nation’s first national armory. It developed manufacturing methods the National Park Service calls critical to American industrialization, and it ran for nearly two centuries before closing in 1968. Downriver in Holyoke, workers began digging four and a half miles of canals by pick and shovel in 1847 to power a planned industrial city.

At its peak the city ran more than 25 paper mills. Those mills and the factories that grew around the Armory left Hampden County with a remarkable stock of brick industrial buildings. Some are converted to apartments, offices and studios; some sit empty between owners. An empty mill is a fire risk, a trespass risk and an insurance headache.

For a building that has lost its sprinkler or alarm coverage, Hub provides fire watch on the schedule the fire department requires. Fire watch is the Hampden County security job that arrives with the least notice.

For a building under renovation, construction site security covers the hours after the trades go home, when copper, tools and equipment tend to walk off. For a stabilized but vacant property, a mobile patrol that checks doors on a GPS-tracked route is usually the more sensible spend than a fixed post. Much of the demand for Hampden County security guard services comes from exactly these buildings. A GPS-tracked route is the most common Hampden County security request from owners of several small properties.

Then there are the crowds. On December 21, 1891, a physical education instructor named James Naismith put up two peach baskets in a Springfield gymnasium and invented basketball, and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame has drawn visitors to the riverfront since 1968. MGM Springfield opened its roughly 14.5-acre downtown casino in August 2018.

Across the river in West Springfield, the Eastern States Exposition drew more than 1.5 million fairgoers in 2025 over its September run, and in Agawam, Six Flags New England has been drawing families to the same ground since the site opened as a picnic grove in 1870. Out on Route 20, the Brimfield Antique Flea Market has run since 1959, three times a year, with roughly 6,000 vendors stretched over about eight miles of fields.

We do not name these venues as clients, and we are not claiming to work at them. We mention them because they describe the character of the county. It is a place that fills up on certain dates, and the hotels, restaurants, parking lots and side streets feel the overflow. Event security for a festival, a concert, a wedding or a corporate function is a normal part of our work, and we staff it for a single day as readily as for a season.

Our new hires carry Crowd Manager certification through the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, along with CPR, First Aid and Narcan training. That matters when a crowd is large and the nearest medic is on the other side of the fairground. That training goes to every Hampden County security event we staff.

Hospitals, colleges and the Air Force Reserve

The county’s largest institutions are the kind that never close. Baystate Medical Center in Springfield operates 716 beds and a Level I trauma center, and the Baystate Health system employs about 12,000 people across the region. Westfield State University traces its roots to the normal school Horace Mann helped open in Barre in 1839, which moved to Westfield in 1844.

Springfield College, where that first basketball game was played, and the county’s other campuses add a student population that lives, parks and walks on campus around the clock. That is how Hampden County security works in the small towns too.

Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee has operated since 1940 and is the nation’s largest Air Force Reserve base, home to the 439th Airlift Wing and more than 2,000 military and civilian employees. The base runs its own security, but the contractors, suppliers and housing around it do not. For properties like these, Hub provides unarmed guards for lobbies, parking structures and residence halls, and armed guards where the risk assessment calls for them.

Every armed guard carries an unrestricted Massachusetts License to Carry, and the firearm can be worn visible or concealed at the client’s choice. Where a property manager is not sure what level of coverage makes sense, a security risk assessment is the honest place to start. It often ends with a smaller recommendation than the client expected. It is the cheapest Hampden County security decision you will make.

Main streets, plazas and the hill towns

Retail in Hampden County runs from the downtown blocks of Springfield and Holyoke to the plazas and strip centers of Westfield, West Springfield and Chicopee, and out to the small stores that anchor the hill towns and the farm towns along the Connecticut line. Shrink, loitering and after-hours break-ins look about the same in a big-box lot as on a main street. Retail security from Hub is scaled to the store rather than to a template.

In the hill towns west of Westfield, such as Russell, Chester and Blandford, where the old Springfield-to-Albany rail line still runs past the Chester station, requests tend to be for short-term coverage: a construction site on a culvert or bridge job, a town event, or a property that needs eyes while an estate is settled. We also take on private investigation work across the county, including background checks, CORI checks, process serving and surveillance.

It falls under the same license that covers our Hampden County security guard services.

How Hub builds a post anywhere in Hampden County

Our approach has not changed much since the company was founded in 2004 by police officers, and the founders are still with us as consultants. Before a guard ever stands a shift, we walk the property with the client and plan the post. We photograph the entrances, the check-in points and anything a new officer would need to recognize at two in the morning.

Those photos go into a post-orders book kept on site, so no one is working from memory. That book is the backbone of every Hampden County security post.

Checkpoints are set at doors and other fixed points, and officers scan each one as they pass. That records that the round was walked and when. Mobile patrols are GPS-tracked, so a client who asks whether the lot was checked at 1:40 a.m. gets an answer backed by data rather than a signature. Dispatch is staffed 24 hours a day, every day, and I visit sites unannounced myself as Operations Manager.

New accounts are matched with a guard within 24 to 48 hours of an approved quote, which matters when a fire watch order arrives late on a Friday. Hampden County security coverage can start that quickly because the planning is already done.

Two things about how we are built are worth stating plainly. First, Hub does not use subcontractors. Every guard on a Hampden County post is a Hub employee who has been run through a background check and vetted by us. Second, we carry $3 million in general liability insurance, and we will send the certificate to your property manager or insurer before the first shift. Ask for both documents before you sign any Hampden County security contract.

We work year-round contracts, summer-only coverage and single events alike, so a request for Hampden County security guard services can be as small as one officer for one Saturday night. Hub Security and Investigative Group operates under Private Detective Firm License #LP0203L, licensed through the Massachusetts State Police Certification Unit, and that single company license covers both our security and our investigative work.

Common questions about Hampden County security guard services

Can Hub cover a short event in a small town like Brimfield or Granville?

Yes. Single-event and seasonal coverage are a normal part of our work, not an exception. A town fair, a church festival, an estate sale or a one-weekend construction push can be staffed with one or two officers, and we build a short post-orders sheet for it the same way we would for a year-round account. Reach us early if your dates fall during the Big E or a Brimfield show week, when demand for Hampden County security guard services runs higher than usual.

Is a fixed guard or a mobile patrol the better choice for a vacant mill or warehouse?

It depends on what the building is worth to a trespasser and what your insurer requires. A stabilized building with working alarms is usually well served by a GPS-tracked mobile patrol that checks doors several times a night and reports with timestamps. A building with active renovation, stored materials or a lapsed sprinkler system more often calls for a posted guard or a formal fire watch.

We will tell you which one we think fits after the site walk. The quote reflects that recommendation, not the larger number.

How is Hub licensed for security work in Hampden County?

Hub holds a company license that covers both security guard and private investigation work in Massachusetts, and every guard works under it after a background check and vetting by us. Armed guards additionally carry an unrestricted Massachusetts License to Carry. If a property manager or insurer needs proof, we send a copy of the firm license and the insurance certificate before the first shift.
