Stand on the Hadley side of the Calvin Coolidge Bridge at five o’clock on a weekday and you can watch Hampshire County change shifts. Route 9 carries hospital staff home from Northampton, students back toward Amherst, and shoppers into the Route 9 retail strip where Hampshire Mall sits across from Mountain Farms Mall. This is the middle section of the Pioneer Valley, a county of 164,065 people (U.S. Census Bureau, July 1, 2025 estimate).

Northampton is the traditional county seat, though county government itself was abolished by the state in 1999. If you manage property here, you already know that Hampshire County security guard services have to fit a place that is part college town, part farm country, and part hill-town quiet.

Hub Security and Investigative Group is a Massachusetts security and private investigation company, founded in 2004 by police officers, and we cover all of Hampshire County from our 24/7 dispatch desk. This page explains which communities we serve, what Hampshire County security guard services actually involve, and how we set up a post before the first shift. You will find no client names or job stories below, because we do not publish those.

What you will find is a straight account of what we can provide.

Which communities do we cover in Hampshire County?

Hampshire County is the only county in Massachusetts that is bordered on every side by other Massachusetts counties: Franklin to the north, Worcester to the east, Hampden to the south, and Berkshire to the west. Amherst is the most populous municipality, largely because of its student population, Northampton is the largest year-round community, and Belchertown is the largest by land area.

Several of the larger towns have their own pages on our site, which you can open from the list below. The hill towns and smaller river towns are covered from this page. The list is our service area, not a list of clients.

The takeaway: if your property is anywhere on this list, one phone call reaches the same dispatch desk, whether you are on Main Street in Northampton or a back road in Plainfield.

What does campus-adjacent security look like in Hampshire County?

The Five Colleges, UMass Amherst, Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College and Smith College, share cross-registration and a free bus service run by the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority. UMass Amherst alone enrolled 31,318 students in fall 2025, which means the population of Amherst swings with the academic calendar. Walk through downtown Amherst or along Route 116 on a move-in weekend and you will see what that swing means for landlords, retailers and event organizers.

Hub provides unarmed security guards for apartment complexes and student housing, and retail security for the shops that live on student traffic. We also staff event security for concerts, graduation weekends and private functions near the campuses. Every new hire completes Crowd Manager certification through the MA Department of Fire Services, along with CPR, First Aid and Narcan training. That matters when a crowd of twenty-year-olds fills a venue.

We also offer college campus security as a standing service, and we can scale a post up for the busy weeks and back down for the summer. That training goes to every Hampshire County security event we staff. Most Hampshire County security posts are unarmed.

The takeaway: tell us your academic calendar when you call, because Hampshire County security guard services are easier to price and staff when the quiet months are planned, not discovered.

Who needs Hampshire County security guard services outside the college towns?

Follow Route 9 west out of Northampton and the valley gives way quickly to the hill towns: Williamsburg, Goshen, Cummington and beyond, with Worthington, Chesterfield, Plainfield and Middlefield tucked off the main road. These are small places, Cummington counted 829 residents in 2020 and Huntington 2,094, but they still have town buildings, construction projects, utility work and seasonal events that draw real crowds. The Cummington Fair fills a hillside every August with exhibition halls, an oxen pull, a vaudeville stage and an antique car parade.

For these towns, Hub’s mobile patrol is usually the sensible answer: a marked vehicle checking several properties on a GPS-tracked route costs far less than a fixed post, and it suits a vacant building, a town garage or a summer camp between sessions.

When a project needs an officer on site, our construction site security covers equipment yards and open foundations, and fire watch fills the gap when a sprinkler or alarm system is down in an older mill building or a hall awaiting inspection. A GPS-tracked route is the most common Hampshire County security request from owners of several small properties. Fire watch is the Hampshire County security job that arrives with the least notice.

The takeaway: distance is not a reason to go without coverage. Our dispatch desk is staffed around the clock, and a patrol route can be built around where your properties actually are.

What about the hospital, the fairgrounds and the Route 9 retail strip?

Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, a member of Mass General Brigham, holds 140 licensed beds and anchors health care for the valley. Every Labor Day weekend, the Three County Fair on Fair Street in Northampton draws about 40,000 visitors over four days, continuing a tradition the Hampshire, Franklin and Hampden Agricultural Society has run since its 1818 charter.

And across the Coolidge Bridge in Hadley, Hampshire Mall’s 435,000 square feet, with Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods, JCPenney and PetSmart, face Mountain Farms Mall across Route 9 in one of the busiest retail stretches in Western Massachusetts.

Each of these settings calls for a different kind of officer. Medical offices and clinics often want an unarmed guard with a calm presence at the entrance, and sometimes an armed security guard for a higher-risk location. Every armed guard Hub fields carries an unrestricted Massachusetts License to Carry. The firearm can be concealed or visible, at your choice. Fairs, festivals and farm stands with pick-your-own weekends need event security that knows how to manage gates, parking fields and lost children.

Retail owners along Route 9 usually want a mix: a visible officer in the store during peak hours and a patrol car in the lot after close. A security risk assessment is the right place to start when you are not sure which mix fits. It is the cheapest Hampshire County security decision you will make.

The takeaway: a single-event or seasonal contract is fine with us. You do not need a year-round agreement to get Hampshire County security guard services for a four-day fair or a holiday shopping season.

What else can Hub do for property owners and attorneys in Hampshire County?

Hampshire County security guard services are only part of what we do. Because our license covers both security and private investigation work, you can also hire Hub for private investigation services: background checks and CORI checks for a hiring decision, surveillance for an insurance or workplace matter, and process serving for law offices in and around the Northampton courts. The county’s quieter character does not make these needs rarer.

It just makes discretion more important, and our investigators understand that in a small town everyone knows the car.

The takeaway: if the problem on your property is a question rather than a threat, ask us about an investigation before you post a guard.

How does Hub set up a post in Hampshire County?

You should expect to see us before you see a guard. We walk the property with you, note the entrances, lighting, parking and problem corners, and plan the post together. We photograph the entrances and check-in points and record them in a post-orders book that stays on site, so an officer covering a shift for the first time knows exactly where to stand, what to check and whom to call.

Checkpoint scans at doors prove each point was walked and record the time. Every mobile patrol is GPS-tracked, so you can see that the lot in Belchertown was checked at 2:14 a.m. rather than take our word for it. That book is the backbone of every Hampshire County security post.

A few more things you should know about how we operate:

Hub Security and Investigative Group operates under Private Detective Firm License #LP0203L, held since 2004 and licensed through the Massachusetts State Police Certification Unit, which covers both our security guard and private investigation work. The license belongs to the company.

The takeaway: the walk-through is free of surprises for both of us. By the time the first officer arrives, the post has already been planned, photographed and written down.

Common questions about Hampshire County security guard services

Can you cover a property in the hill towns, or only Northampton and Amherst?

We provide security guard services in Hampshire County’s twenty communities listed above, including Plainfield, Middlefield, Worthington and the other hill towns along Route 9 and Route 112. For properties well off the main corridors, a GPS-tracked mobile patrol is often the best value, and we will say so during the site walk if a fixed post is more than you need. That is how Hampshire County security works in the small towns too.

Do you handle student housing turnover and move-in weekends near UMass Amherst?

Yes. We can staff unarmed officers at apartment complexes and lots for move-in and move-out weekends, graduation and the first weeks of each semester, then scale back for the summer. Every new hire holds Crowd Manager certification through the MA Department of Fire Services along with CPR, First Aid and Narcan training.

How fast can you start a post in Hampshire County?

Once a quote is approved, we match the account with a guard within 24 to 48 hours. The site walk, photographs and post-orders book are completed before the first shift, so the officer arrives already knowing the property.
