Known historically as “Mother Mendon,” the town was originally incorporated in 1667 as a roughly 64-square-mile territory from which many surrounding towns — including Bellingham, Milford, Uxbridge, Northbridge, Hopedale, Upton, and Blackstone — were later carved off. Settlers from Braintree purchased the land from the Nipmuc people in 1662, and on July 14, 1675, Mendon suffered an early attack in King Philip’s War; the town was largely burned that winter and resettled by 1680. Today Mendon sits within the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor and is home to Southwick’s Zoo, Massachusetts’s largest zoo, and the Mendon Twin Drive-In.
