Billerica was settled in 1652 on land the English called Shawshin, previously home to a Native “praying town” established under John Eliot’s mission, and incorporated in 1655 under a name borrowed from Billericay, England. The town’s fortunes turned again in 1795, when the Middlesex Canal connected the Concord and Merrimack rivers, and turned once more in the 1840s, when the Boston and Lowell Railroad brought textile mills to the Shawsheen River in what is now North Billerica. Each wave of industry pulled the town’s center of gravity in a new direction, and the result is a town today split among several distinct villages rather than one downtown.
